The Eight Limbs of Yoga: Living Beyond the Mat

When many people hear the word yoga, their minds immediately go to asana, the physical postures we practice on our mats. While asana is a beautiful and intricate part of yoga, it is only one piece of a much larger philosophy.

The word yoga itself means union. It is an umbrella term, a complete system for living with awareness, integrity, and connection.

According to the ancient teachings outlined in the Yoga Sutras, there are eight limbs of yoga. These limbs offer a pathway not just for movement, but for how we live, breathe, focus, and evolve.

The Eight Limbs of Yoga

1.Yamas (Restraints)

Ethical principles that guide how we relate to the world.

For example, Ahimsa - practicing non-harm in thought, word, and action.

2.Niyamas (Observances)

Personal disciplines that shape our inner world.

Tapas — cultivating discipline and devotion, is one example.

3.Asana (Posture)

The physical practice that prepares the body for stillness and awareness.

4.Pranayama (Breath Regulation)

Conscious breathing practices that regulate energy and calm the nervous system.

5.Pratyahara (Sensory Withdrawal)

Turning inward and gently drawing awareness away from external distractions.

6.Dharana (Concentration)

Focused attention on a single point, such as the flame of a candle.

7.Dhyana (Meditation)

Sustained awareness and effortless presence.

8.Samadhi (Enlightenment or Union)

A state of deep absorption, where separation dissolves and we experience unity.

You may already be practicing yoga in ways you don’t even realize.

When you choose kindness instead of reactivity, that is yoga.

When you commit to learning one posture with patience and discipline, that is yoga.

When you engage in breathwork, meditation, or concentrate on a single point, that is yoga.

Yoga is not confined to the mat.

It is how we live.

It is how we breathe.

It is how we show up for ourselves and for one another.

At its heart, yoga is a way of being, an invitation to embody awareness in every moment.

And that is something we can practice anywhere.
