In her youth, Shannon trained in artistic and acrobatic gymnastics. When she discovered yoga in 2005, it was the perfect balance of the mental work she enjoyed in Psychology and the physical movement of the body that she loved in gymnastics. Shannon completed her 200 Hour Teacher Training with Yax Yoga Concepts in Virginia Beach, VA in 2013 and has been teaching ever since. She received her 300 Hour Teacher Training with Beyond Bryce in Koh Samui, Thailand in 2018. Her teachers during her 300 hour training included Dice Iida-Klein, Briohny Smith, Honza Lafond, Claudine Lafond, and Mathieu Boldron. She strongly believes in the connection between mind, body, and soul, and this reflects in her Vinyasa style teaching. She loves the constant movement of the body in Vinyasa and feels that it helps us to find strength within and bring awareness into the present moment. Although arm balances and inversions are offered in her classes, modifications are always provided to make practitioners of every level comfortable during their practice.

Christa Smith

Teacher

Christa Smith is a lifestyle coach with a desire to help busy people achieve their health and fitness goals.

Though her full-time profession is in television and film production, she’s always had a passion for fitness. In 2012 she received her 200-hour yoga instructor certification, and has taught traditional Vinyasa yoga, Yoga sculpt, Cycling and Barre.

As most women Christa found herself at her heaviest weight after the birth of her son. It took her nearly 5 years, but on her 30th birthday she finally decided to refocus on herself and her fitness journey. She began to get involved with online fitness accountability groups and started to see results quickly.

She realized she could take her various experiences, both failures and successes, and pay them forward. By combining a balanced diet, Yoga, HIIT and cardio she believes people can obtain their healthiest physical body.

However, Christa doesn’t solely believe that a physical change is enough to reach and maintain a healthy lifestyle. She encourages individuals to find their "tribe" as well. Christa achieved her best fitness results after participating in an online challenge group. Since then she's hosted and facilitated many of her own.

By refocusing her mindset Christa has been able to shift her life towards a more positive and uplifting state of being. Through her work as a lifestyle coach she hopes to help others do the same for others.

Betsy Laban

Teacher

From Betsy, "A diagnosis of fibromyalgia gave me the incentive to come to yoga to help heal my body, mind and spirit. I was certified by my Guru through the Sajni Yoga Center in Bangalore, India. Other blessings along the way include co-founding Gita Yoga Learning Center where I have trained and certified several 200 and 500 hour yoga instructors, and provide continuing education units through Yoga Alliance. I was able to study with Dr. Larry Payne with whom I continued my education in POLY (Prime of Life Yoga) obtaining my POLY500 through SAMATA/LMU. I received my certification in Yoga Nidra with Dr. Marc Halpern (California College of Ayurveda) and most recently acquired my certification in Back Care Yoga (Vista Yoga Academy). My own body and health issues showed me that not only was I going to heal myself but that it was my Dharma to help others do the same. There is no greater joy than watching people leave our time together, with happy faces and lighter hearts. With that in mind I followed my calling even further obtaining my Reiki Master certification leading me to the world of energy healing.

I have been given the opportunity to study with some of the most amazing teachers. I have gathered wisdom from the masters to the ones who are not as well known. There is nothing quite as lovely as sharing everything they have given me to help others heal their bodies, their minds, their spirit by showing them the joys of finding and living their truth. It is a blessing to serve and to be a part of a community of loving, caring healers."

Jenise Stout Fryatt

Trained by Big Bear Yoga Festival organizers, Lisa Ann Gold and Annalisa Berns, Jenise has been teaching yoga for four years. She had the honor of teaching her first yoga class (the very first class in the Big Bear City studio) at Big Bear Yoga.

Her passions include singing, dancing, acting, improv, homesteading and permaculture - all pursued with an eye toward helping herself and others ride and make the most of the energies now transforming our planet into the New Earth.

Jenise believes that raising our individual vibrational frequency is the most important work anyone can do at this time. Facing, healing and integrating our inner wounds through meditation, journaling and inner work is what makes this possible. But gratitude, staying present-oriented and following one's bliss are all just as important.

Jenise teaches an easy flow class each Saturday and Big Bear Yoga. She taught Laughter Yoga with Lisa Ann at the Big Bear Yoga Festival last year. This year she will join Lisa Ann to teach the class again, but this time adding a little twist from her background in improv.

Dr. Marie Feuer

Teacher

Dr. Marie organized her first demonstration against racism when she was 11 years old. From 17 years until 23 she was an activist for social justice, fair elections for all, treaty rights for Native Americans, equal rights for LBGQT, people of color, women, Native Americans, and more. She lived and worked in some of the poorest urban and rural areas of the USA. Working as a community organizer, educator, and activist for under-represented populations she faced gun fire, tear gas, arrest and had many other hair raising adventures working for peace and social justice. Her activism continued for years in addition to her work as a Professor for at risk students (those who do not fit into mainstream education). Her concern and activism to help Earth and its peoples (including all creatures great and small) morphed into her continued Spiritual and Energetic work.

Dr. Marie began her Spiritual Work in 1973 when she met and was asked to travel with the Lakota Medicine Man, Leonard Crow Dog. (In those days, the Teachers chose the students; you could not hire a "teacher" and pay for a certification.) She began giving her profound predictive Life Path Readings in 1987 encouraged by her Taoist Teacher who trained her natural talent. In addition to her innate talents and gifts, she has been blessed to have extraordinary human and non-human (Spirits) Teachers. Her personal spiritual cultivation includes years of study and work with old time metaphysical masters, Native American medicine men and women, channeled entities, Taoist energy workers and psychics. She has studied numerology life charts, remote healing methods, homeopathy, herbs, tantra, and many other modalities. Her studies, meditations, and spiritual practices continue to grow each year.

Dr. Marie's mainstream training includes a PhD in Health Psychology and Behavioral Medicines and years of study and practice with classic psychological therapeutic models, family and relationship work, twelve-step processes, nutritional and body/mind/spirit healing, complementary, alternative, and quantum medicine especially as relates to mood issues and mood disorders. She has had successful mainstream careers as a community organizer, Professor, corporate and leadership trainer (for details see: Dr. MarieFeuer on LinkedIn) and offers talented real world expertise in unique combination with deep spiritual practices including but not limited to predictive Life Path Readings.

This vast array of experiences and disciplines gives Dr. Marie a special talent whereby she can identify and address a person's spiritual crises as well as earth plane issues. She is then able to provide solutions based on solid well researched methodologies in addition to implementing unusual spiritual and trans-dimensional interventions. Dr. Marie specializes in her ability to integrate the spiritual beliefs and individual world outlook of each person, and then provide new contextual frameworks to view life’s challenges, identify gifts, find solutions, and pursue personal dreams.

Therapeutic Yoga for Mental and Emotional Health

11:00am – 12noon – BOOK SIGNING & FREE CLASS – Registration still required. Books will be available for purchase.

Of the 36.7 million Americans practicing yoga in 2016, 37% reported starting yoga and 35% continuing yoga specifically for mental health benefits. In addition, 56% reported starting yoga and 53% continuing yoga for stress relief (Yoga Alliance et al., 2016). And of course, there is an emotional health component to the experience of every student with whom a yoga teacher works. It is therefore crucial that yoga teachers have a well-informed lens through which to truly understand the connection between yoga and mental health. In this talk, the presenter will share a comprehensive, trauma-informed, easy-to-use framework for addressing mental and emotional health that she has developed through her experience of working with hundreds of clients in her psychotherapy practice.  This framework, which  is informed by yogic philosophy, psychological theory, and neuroscience research, can be used to understand how to work with yoga for a range of mental health diagnoses including anxiety disorders, mood disorders, PTSD, ADHD, and substance abuse.

Alona Smith

Event Management

Alona Smith is a dear friend of Big Bear Yoga Festival, and has been with us since the first year. Here is what Alona shares, "I began practicing Yoga over fifteen years ago, yet I feel I have been practicing asanas (postures) since I was a child and before I knew these postures had names. A knee injury I received after running a marathon led me to my first class. There I received more than just a workout. It was spiritual and emotional and a sure introduction into what would then become my way of life."

Alona is a cornerstone of the yoga community in the Inland Empire, donating her time and love to support yoga for everyone. She is the founder and teacher of the Anam Cara studio. Her vision for Anam Cara studio is for it to be compassionate, empowering, and inspiring, and to create a safe and fun environment where students can learn to listen to, honor and respect their bodies, achieve more balance in life, reduce stress, and increase flexibility.

Nancy is a holistic health practitioner. She is a yoga instructor, a breath work facilitator, a psychic, and a healer.

New this year, Alona is shifting from a teaching position at Big Bear Yoga Festival to assist in management to help things roll smoothly! It takes many people contributing in many different ways to have an amazing event! We are beyond thankful to Alona for sharing her joy and time with us.
